A 32 year-old man who stabbed a young woman in the back on a street in Amsterdam died shortly after he was arrested.

The incident took place in the central De Pijp area in Amsterdam. An 18 year-old girl was said to have minor injuries.

According to broadcaster NOS, the man was pursued by another man who hit him on the head with a heavy object. Both men were arrested but the wounded man put up a fight, during which his heart stopped. He later died in hospital.

Both the cause of his death and the incident itself are being investigated.
