Two of the five products nominated for this year’s Wakker Dier competition for misleading advertising have been withdrawn, after pledging to take action before voting closed.

The animal rights group says supermarket group Jumbo will stop selling live lobsters, while Albert Heijn has agreed to relabel its ‘premium’ duck products. The ducks are raised in factory farms with no access to water.

Three products are left in the race. Rabobank is under fire for its advertising campaign based on creating a ‘better world’ and more sustainable food production. The bank invested €6.8bn between 2012 and 2017 in companies which have very low animal welfare standards, Wakker Dier said.

Ecostyle is on the list with its animal food which gives the impression of being made from organic meat. In fact, only the herbs are organic and the meat is from factory farms, Wakker Dier said.

Ecostyle director Pier Oosterkamp told broadcaster NOS. “Our company is being made out to be a liar and that is not the case. You will not see the word ‘organic’ on our packaging. We are suggesting nothing.’

The third item on the list is Campina, which includes on some of its dairy product packaging a quote from a farmer saying the aim of the cooperative is to let cows grow as old as possible. Most dairy cows are slaughtered at around the age of five or six, Wakker Dier states.

So far more nearly 23,000 people have taken part in the vote. Voting closes on Sunday.
