Two Dutch Turks arrested in Greece for plot to kill Erdogan
Two Dutch Turks are among nine men arrested in Greece at the end of November on suspicion of plotting to kill Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, broadcaster NOS said on Tuesday.
The two, Anil S who is 23 and from Amsterdam and Burak A who is 26 and from Eindhoven, are both on the official Dutch terrorism list for their membership of an extreme left-wing organisation. They travelled to Athens at the end of November ahead of a two-day visit by the Turkish president.
The duo are said to be members of the Marxist DHKP/C (Revolutionary People’s Liberation Party/Front) which opposes Turkish membership of Nato and wants to establish a Turkish socialist state. The group is banned in Europe.
According to Turkish and Greek media, they were planning to attack the president’s convoy with rocket launchers.
The Dutch foreign affairs ministry says it is aware of the reports but has not yet made any comment about them.
