New Dutch cabinet’s motto is ‘Trust in the Future’
The motto of the new Dutch cabinet, which is set to formally present its plans to parliament and the public on Tuesday, is to be vertrouwen in de toekomst or ‘trust in the future’, Dutch media said on Monday.
The new alliance, the third to be headed by prime minister Mark Rutte, has been 208 days in the making.
On Monday, the four parliamentary parties involved in the coalition – the VVD, D66, CDA and ChristenUnie – were given copies of the plans for their approval.
It is a ‘solid agreement,’ D66 leader Alexander Pechtold said. ‘I am proud that this has been possible and that it is a balanced and sustainable accord.’
‘Everyone had to make sacrifices but it has a lot of good points,’ said ChristenUnie leader Gert-Jan Segers. VVD leader and PM Mark Rutte said he is ‘extremely happy’ to have something on the table.
RTL political correspondent Frits Wester said that coalition slogans are a relatively recent invention. ‘It’s nice as a title but it means very little,’ he said. ‘The motto of the first cabinet led by Jan Pieter Balkenende was “working towards trust, a question of getting on with it”, but that cabinet fell after three months.’
Commentators have already warned that the one-seat majority the new administration will have in the lower house of parliament makes it extremely vulnerable.
