An incident at Amsterdam Centraal station when a car drove into pedestrians and crashed in June was nothing to do with a terror attack, according to a new report.

The police force is learning lessons from the incident, according to a letter from Amsterdam municipal government.

‘Events initially resembled recent terror attacks in Europe,’ the letter reads ‘It turned out it was an accident. The police has learned a number of lessons for future incidents.

‘The goal is to create more clarity and remove doubt and suspicion.’

Low blood sugar

There had been social media criticism about police failure to comment on the ethnicity of the driver. But the city affirmed that police should only reveal a suspect’s age and place of residence.

The 45-year-old driver had got onto the tram tracks, been asked to move by police, then drove at high speed through a pedestrian area, hitting seven people before crashing

Ambulance tests showed no alcohol use but that he had low blood sugar levels. Attempted murder charges have been dropped but the man will still be pursued for traffic offences.

The letter – in the name of terminally ill Amsterdam mayor Eberhard van der Laan – adds that ‘we all have a responsibility in these kind of situations to keep the peace.’
