International organisations in The Hague create 38,500 jobs, or 10% of the workforce, and account for €5.8bn in annual spending, according to a new report by consultancy Decisio.

The report, commissioned by The Hague city council, says the number of people employed by international organisations in The Hague area – including Delft and Leiden – has risen by 32% since 2004. However, total employment in the region increased by only 11% in the period, the report said.

The number of international organisations in The Hague went up from 167 in 2004 to 455 in 2016. Aside from embassies and diplomatic missions, these include international schools, international courts and tribunals, institutes and NGOs.

The number of people working directly at international organisations in The Hague area has increased by 4% to 20,400 in the past few years. Some 60% of these jobs are done by expats and 66% by people who are highly educated, the report said.

International organisations create a further 18,100 indirect jobs, of which 75% are done by people who are less skilled.

The report said these organisations spend an annual $2.8bn, but the total expands to €5.8bn when the indirect spending of personnel, guests and suppliers are included.
