Police surveillance posts are being removed from Jewish institutions in Amsterdam from Monday following the introduction of an advanced camera security system.

Jewish schools, museums and synagogues have been under permanent police surveillance since 2014 when Jewish institutions in Copenhagen and Brussels were attacked.

The new camera system is more effective and efficient, city mayor Eberhard van der Laan, who is in charge of policing, told city councillors in a written statement.

The switch, made in consultation with Jewish organisations, will also cut the number of police officers charged with monitoring the buildings from 58 to 31.
