Wesley Sneijder sets new record: most caps ever for Oranje

Dutch midfielder Wesley Sneijder will on Friday night set a new record in Dutch football – by having the most ever caps for the national team.

Friday’s key World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg will be Sneijder’s 131st turn-out for Oranje, if coach Dick Advocaat keeps his promise to play him. The current record – 130 caps – is held by keeper Edwin van der Sar.

Sneijder currently plays for Turkish side Galatasaray. He won his first cap in 2003 when Oranje drew 1-1 against Portugal. He considers his best ever game to be the 2010 World Cup quarter final in which the Netherlands beat Brazil 2-1, broadcaster NOS said.

The record-breaking game also coincides with Sneijder’s 33rd birthday. He told reporters he has not ordered birthday cake ahead of the game. ‘It is all about three points,’ he said. ‘I have nothing to celebrate if we don’t beat Luxembourg.’

Oranje is currently languishing fourth in Group A with seven points from five matches and is struggling to qualify for Russia 2018.
