PSV survived a second-half onslaught in Porto to secure their first win of the Champions League group stages.

Guus Til scored the only goal when he tapped in from close range after Esmir Bajraktarevic’s shot had come back off the post and was steered across goal by Sven Mijnans.

The Eindhoven club were worth their narrow lead against Francesco Farioli’s side after dominating possession in the first half, but rarely troubled Diogo Costa in the Porto goal.

Til went close with a header early in the second half before putting PSV ahead in the 57th minute.

But the visitors had to defend heroically as Porto poured forward in search of an equaliser, aided by an increasingly fragile Matej Kovar.

The goalkeeper put his defenders in jeopardy with a weak clearance in the 72nd minute, but redeemed himself by saving Victor Froholdt’s shot with his chest before Lutsarel Geertruida blocked the follow-up from Pepê.

A minute later Kovar was left stranded after he rushed out of his penalty area, but Sergiño Dest managed to hack the ball away before Alberto Costa could poke it into the open goal.

At the other end, substitute Denis Man came close to scoring a second for PSV with his first touch when his curling shot beat Costa but failed to sneak inside the post.

The 1-0 win lifts PSV to a provisional 16th place in the Champions League table at the halfway stage of round three, while Porto are still looking for their first point.

Their next match is at home to Belgian side Club Brugge, who will make the short trip to Eindhoven on November 4.
