A police officer on a motorbike has been filmed driving through a supermarket while chasing a moped rider who refused to stop at a checkpoint and ran off.

Visitors to the Albert Heijn supermarket in Doesburg were visibly shocked when the youth ran through the store, closely followed by the motorbike.

A police spokesman told local broadcaster Omroep Gelderland that the motorbike cop feared his prey would get away if he got off the motorbike so he decided to carry on driving through the automatic doors.

The youth was stopped by passersby outside the supermarket. It later transpired he had run off because he was driving someone else’s souped up moped and did not have his driving licence with him.

The spokesman said the low-speed chase had not led to any dangerous situations and that the driver is a experienced motor cyclist. ‘He had a good view, the doors opened and of course a motorbike makes a lot of noise so people were warned,’ the spokesman said.

However eyewitness Mandy Kampen told the broadcaster she thought she was in the middle of a film set. ‘A small child could have run out or something but the driver did not hit anything, which is pretty smart,’ she said.
