Demand for green energy grew by about 10% in 2016 to a record 48 billion kilowatt hours, ANP news agency reported on Friday. The average household uses about 3,500 kilowatt hours per year, the agency said.

The figures were supplied by CertiQ, a subsidiary of grid manager Tennet, which awards certificates to alternative energy produced by solar, wind, water and biomass sources.

Dutch energy companies produce only about 25% of the demand for green energy and the remaining 75% is imported from other sources, including hydroelectric plants in Norway

Demand for wind energy has increased by 70% as large customers specify energy produced by wind farms.  At the same time, demand for hydroelectric power fell back last year, ANP said.
