Mixed fortunes in Europe: Ajax assured of Europa League knock-out competition
Amsterdam football club Ajax is assured of a place in the Europa League knock-out competition after beating Spanish club Celta de Vigo 3-2 at home on Thursday evening.
Ajax dominated the first half and the scoring was opened by 19-year-old Danish signing Kasper Dolberg just before half time.
The win gives Ajax 10 points from four games and qualifies them for the round of 32 after the winter break.
Ajax now have a run of eight successive home wins in European competition.
Feyenoord and AZ, the two other Dutch teams in the competition, both drew away. Feyenoord managed a 1-1 draw against Ukranian side Zorya in Odessa while AZ’s game against Maccabi Tel Aviv ended without scoring.
AZ are bottom of Group D and unlikely to move on in the competition. Feyenoord, who had been leading Group A, are now down to second place on goal differences behind Fenerbahçe SK. Both are one point above Manchester United.
