Ajax’ unbeaten run record is under threat from minor Scottish side
Amsterdam football club Ajax have paid tribute to a minor Scottish club for equalling their world record run of 26 consecutive wins.
East Kilbride FC reached the landmark with a 4-2 victory over Vale of Leithen at the weekend. Ajax reached the unbeaten run of 26 between October 1971 and March 1972.
Ajax’ record was made up of 19 Eredivisie duels, four Europa Cup games and three rounds of the KNVB Cup. The Amsterdammer’s unbeaten run was ended by Go Ahead Eagles on April 1. The club almost repeated the feat in 1995/96 but lost their 26th game.
In a message to the Scottish club, who play in the Lowland League, Ajax said they had done a ‘great job’. The Dutch gesture generated headlines in the Scottish press and on BBC Scotland.
@officialEKFC great job guys! Well done 👏 2⃣6⃣ wins in a row!
