A man has been killed in an early morning raid on his home in the Drenthe village of Gees, police said on Thursday.

The man, who has not been named, was seriously injured in the armed robbery and died later. His wife was uninjured in the attack.

The police say three men – described as ‘possibly being foreigners’ – burst into the home on the Dorpstraat. It is still unclear what exactly happened in the house but the men may have used make-up to disguise their faces, police said.

‘The woman is our only witness and is extremely upset,’ a police spokeswoman told news agency ANP. ‘We are currently focused on tracking down the suspects.’
