Way cleared for Japanese brewer to take over Grolsch
Dutch brewing group Grolsch and Italy’s Peroni are set to be taken over by Japanese brewer Asahi in a deal said to be worth some €2.55bn.
The world’s biggest brewer, AB Inbev, has agreed to the deal, which clears the way for Inbev to merge with SABMiller. Grolsch was put up for sale in an effort to win Brussels’ approval for a merger between the world’s two biggest beer groups.
The deal is conditional on the takeover of SABMiller by AB Inbev going through and on European Commission approval of the Asahi takeover.
British-South African brewing group SABMiller bought Grolsch for €816m at the end of 2007.
