Smaller King’s Day events cancelled as wintry weather continues
Dozens of smaller King’s Day events have been cancelled because of the expected bad weather, broadcaster Nos said on Tuesday.
Big festivals are going ahead in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Groningen, but the organisers have been making last minute plans to cope with the expected stormy weather by hiring in marquees and buying thousands of rain ponchos.
Weather forecasters say it could be the coldest King or Queen’s Day on record. The sun may shine between the cloudbursts but the north westerly wind will be strong in coastal areas, particularly in the morning. The best of the weather will be in the afternoon, the KNMI weather bureau said.
The king and rest of the royal family are celebrating in Zwolle and well-wishers have been warned to wrap up well if they plan to wait to catch a glimpse of the royal group.
Snow
Large parts of the northern and eastern Netherlands were blanketed by hail and snow on Tuesday morning as the KNMI weather bureau issued a code yellow warning for the entire country.
