The Netherlands lost their first match of the World Cup Twenty20 cricket tournament by eight runs to Bangladesh on Wednesday, despite a spirited performance in Dharamsala.

The Netherlands decided to field first after winning the toss and Bangladesh went on to reach 153/7, after Tanim Iqbal put on 83 runs. The Netherlands needed 17 runs off the last over but could only manage eight.

The Bangladesh tie was crucial to Oranje’s hopes of progressing through to the next round in the competition.

‘It’s not an easy competition to get through to Super 10,’ Dutch captain Peter Borren told the ICC website in an interview ahead of the game. ‘We managed to get through in 2014 and that’s what we are going to try and do again.’

One team from Group A, which also includes Ireland and Oman who meet later on Wednesday, will qualify for the Super 10 stage when the eight major teams enter the competition.
