Councils are missing refugee accommodation targets

Migration Concept refugeesDutch councils have failed to meet their target of finding 12,500 extra emergency beds for refugees this year, Trouw says on Monday.

Since the end of October, 7,300 new beds have been found, leaving a shortfall of over 5,000, Trouw says. This means more refugees are being moved from crisis accommodation, where they can stay for up to 72 hours, to another crisis location, the paper says.

By the end of February next year, councils are also supposed to have finalised plans to develop long-term accommodation for a further 30,000 people. This too is unlikely to be met, officials say.

According to the most recent figures, 7,300 people applied for refugee status in the Netherlands in November. That takes the total this year to 52,500.
