Recorded crime drops for seventh successive year

October 19, 2015

Cordon tape from policeRecorded crime dropped 23% in 2014, the seventh successive year to show a decrease, according to figures from the central statistics agency CBS on Monday.

There were just over one million recorded crimes last year, compared with 1.3 million in 2007, the CBS said.

Robbery and fraud remain the most common crimes, followed by vandalism and assaults.

The number of recorded suspects also dropped, from 497,000 in 2007 to 312,000 in 2014. According to the CBS, there were actually 215,000 recorded suspects because some of them are picked up for more than one crime during a year.

The public prosecutor dealt with 220,000 cases last year, one-fifth fewer than in 2007. Courts saw cases drop by a quarter, to 98,000. the CBS said.
