volvo ocean race sailing

From theatre in tents and the voice of Elsa to ocean-going yachts and great jazz drumming, here’s our pick of the week’s best things to do.

Admire some big boats
The Volvo Ocean Race, the round the world yacht race which began on October 4 2014, makes a 24-hour pit-stop in The Hague before departing for the final stage to Göteborg for the finish on June 27.

For the first time in its history, this 12th edition of the race, which has nine stages, sees all seven competing teams sailing in the same class of boat: the Volvo Ocean 65.

Take a walk around outdoor sculpture
ArtZuid is the annual international outdoor sculpture exhibition. The selected works are erected along the wide and leafy avenues of the south of Amsterdam, an area planned by the architect HP Berlage nearly one hundred years ago.

This year’s selection was made by Rudi Fuchs, former director of Amsterdam’s Stedelijk Museum, and includes works by Georg Baselitz (photo), AR Penck, Markus Lüpertz, Thomas Schütte and Tony Cragg.

Join a travelling theatre
De Parade begins in Rotterdam this week. It consists of a large number of colourful tents offering performances of music, theatre, dance, opera and mime, while others are restaurants or cafes. Whatever the weather, the circus-like atmosphere is a real treat.

And with performances taking between three and forty minutes, it’s easy to fit in several each evening. Many are in Dutch, but there are a number of shows in English or without words.

Among those appearing are Dutch rock diva Ellen ten Damme, theatre group Carver with an amusing take on the teasing that goes on at a swimming pool and students from the mime school in Amsterdam.

There are also Gideon Mendel’s pictures from his series Drowning World which show people up to their waists in flood water, and Federico Scarchilli’s shots of waterways taken at night.

Listen to classical music in odd venues
The annual Festival Classique makes classical music fun by keeping concerts short – none lasts more than one hour – and holding them in surprising venues such as McDonald’s or outdoors on a large stage moored in the middle of the Hofvijver outside parliament. The musical range is wide: from John Adam to Tchaikovsky and from Fauré to Stravinsky.

Sob your way through a film
Testament of Youth is a film adaptation of Vera Brittain’s memoir of World War I, and has an extraordinary central performance from Alicia Vikander. Director James Kent and his screenwriter Juliette Towhidi have done an excellent job of bringing Brittain’s 661-page memoir to the screen focusing on events leading up to the war and the war itself.
