Almost 500,000 Dutch nationals live in another European country
Almost 500,000 Dutch nationals live and work in another European country, the CBS statistics office said on Wednesday.
The figures, which date from 2011, show most Dutch nationals who live elsewhere in Europe remain close to home, concentrating on Belgium (126,000) and Germany (112,000).
Although the split is even between men and women, there are strong local variations. No more than one-quarter of the Dutch people living in Estonia and Latvia are female, compared with 65% in Greece and Italy, the CBS said.
Around 15% of the Dutch nationals living elsewhere in Europe are under the age of 30, while 40% are over the age of 50.
The under-30s account for half of the Dutch nationals living in Britain, but this is likely to be due to the large number of students, the CBS said. The over-50s account for the biggest group of Dutch nationals living in Germany and Belgium.
The research is based on information from censuses taken in 32 countries across Europe.
