Stedelijk museum receives substantial gift of artworks

The Stedelijk museum in Amsterdam is to receive a substantial gift of works by leading contemporary artists such as Carl Andre, Anselm Kiefer and Bruce Nauman.

The gift comes from the artists Coosje van Bruggen, who died in 2009, and Claes Oldenburg with whom the Stedelijk has a lengthy relationship. Van Bruggen was a curator at the museum between 1967 and 1971, the period in which she met her American husband.

The collection is very varied, consisting of installations, collages, scuplture, photographs, works on paper, books and posters, NRC reports.

In total, there are 175 works by 34 artists.

Their daughter Maartje Oldenburg told the paper that it was obvious the collection should go to the Stedelijk. ‘Many of the works were given to my mother when she worked there. They will fit into the museum’s collection better than anywhere else.’
