‘Jihad gala’ will go ahead, organisers shocked by uproar
A fund-raising event in Rijswijk which, according to the Telegraaf newspaper, will be addressed by several controversial imams, will go ahead, council officials say.
They have been in talks with the Rohamaa foundation which is organising the event and will continue to discuss developments on Tuesday. news agency ANP says. The council is keen to ensure a balanced approach, officials said in a statement.
The foundation itself says it has been shocked by the media debate which does not reflect the real situation.
‘There is no way this benefit will be used as a podium to take a stand on international conflicts or to encourage the guests to do anything other than give generously,’ ANP quotes the foundation as saying.
The aim of the fundraiser on March 8 is to raise money for the handicapped, orphans, refugees and homeless all over the world. The performers include speakers, poets and singers.
MPs from several parties have asked the government to give assurances that no imams who preach hatred and encourage jihad are on the guest list.
