New Year swimThe sea temperature for people planning a New Year’s Day swim on Thursday is ‘unusually warm’ for the time of year, weather forecaster Meteo said on Tuesday.

The North Sea is around 8 Celsius at the moment, compared with around 6 Celsius in recent years.

Thursday will be dry and around 6 Celsius on land for those who fancy taking the plunge, but it will feel chilly in the southerly wind, Meteo says.

Smoked sausage and soup maker Unox, which organises many of the swims, expects around 50,000 people to take part this year.

The biggest dip with around 10,000 participants, takes place at the seaside resort of Scheveningen but there are a further 137 locations where swims are being organised.
