Israeli sex case rabbi extradition delayed by ‘new evidence’

December 1, 2014

brown gavelA rabbi wanted in Israel for allegedly sexually abusing several young women will not yet be extradited because of new evidence, a court in Haarlem said on Monday.

The extradition has been delayed because of new information sent to the court on Friday, the Telegraaf reports.

Eliezer Berland’s lawyer says most of the offences he has been charged with relate to events which occurred in parts of Israel beyond the borders recognised by the Netherlands.

The court said it wanted to look into these claims in more detail, a decision the court press officer described as ‘exceptional’. A new court date will be set as soon as possible.

Berland was arrested at Schiphol airport in September but released from custody the next day.

The claims against the rabbi first emerged in 2012 and since then the rabbi has managed to keep out of Israel hands, spending time in the US, Switzerland, Morocco, Zimbabwe and South Africa.
