Rebuilt mill is a replica and cannot be listed, minister says
An 18th century windmill totally destroyed by fire and then rebuilt is not an historic building and should not be included on the official monument list, culture minister Jet Bussemaker has decided.
The Windlust mill in Burum in Friesland is a replica and cannot therefore be placed on the protected building list on principle, the minister says.
The original mill was built in 1787 and burned down in 2012. Without a state monument label, the mill is not eligible for various government maintenance subsidies.
MPs and the Dutch culture council had recommended the mill be included in the register of historic buildings.
