‘Minister is open to moped helmets on busy roads’

Transport minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen is open to the idea of making moped drivers wear helmets on very busy or dangerous roads, according to Amsterdam city council official Maarten van Poelgeest.

Amsterdam wants helmets to be made compulsory for moped users so they can be banned from cycle lanes but the minister has stated several times she is not in favour of the move.

Mopeds are involved in 16% of the city’s traffic accidents.

However, talks between the minister, Poelgeest and mayor Eberhard van der Laan earlier this week show there is some progress being made.

‘The minister told us that she is open to tailor-made measures to meet local situations and has promised to look into whether this can be done,’ Poelgeest said.
