Dutch Christmas markets ‘increasingly popular’
While bus loads of people make the trip over the border to German Christmas markets, the concept is also taking off in the Netherlands, according to figures from the Dutch tourist board NBTC.
It says 10 million people visited a Christmas market either in the Netherlands or abroad last year, up from 9.2 million in 2010.
The Netherlands has nine large Christmas markets. According to the Centre for Retail Research in Nottingham, the Netherlands is the fourth most popular location in Europe to visit a Christmas market, behind Germany, Britain and France.
Dordrecht, Haarlem, Maastricht, Nijmegen and Valkenburg are the most popular Dutch destinations, according to the British research.
