NS begins autumn schedule

Dutch railway NS introduced its autumn schedule on Monday morning to prevent delays caused by slippery rails and falling leaves.

Trains on several lines, such as Haarlem-Amsterdam and Utrecht-Amersfoort, will be given a few extra minutes on their journey time to allow drivers to bring their train up to speed slowly and to brake gradually, press agency Novum reports.

This will affect the arrival and departure times on these routes.

Trees and bushes along the lines are being cut back and in some places a special gel that gives the rails more grip is being used.

The autumn schedule will be in use until December 14.
