Helmond alderman resigns over expenses claims
An alderman in the southern town of Helmond has resigned after it emerged he had claimed expenses for dozens of taxi rides home from town centre cafes.
Peter Tielemans quit after local paper Eindhovens Dagblad revealed the council had paid for 111 taxi journeys in 2011 and 2012, of which 92 had the city centre as either the start or end of the journey.
Although the claims were not technically illegal, other parties withdrew their support for Tielemans. His party, the local interest SDOH, in turn then withdrew from the coalition, which has now collapsed.
