Dutch woman has sight restored by chip

A 63-year-old woman is the first person in the Netherlands to have her sight partially restored with the implantation of a chip.

The chip was implanted in her retina and communicates with a tiny camera on a pair of glasses, says the Volkskrant.

The woman underwent the procedure in the Amsterdam Zonnestraal clinic in May.

The operation is suitable for people suffering from retinitis pigmentosa who can still differentiate between dark and light.

Insurance

According to Marcos Mura, who performed the operation, 4,700 people suffer from the disease in the Netherlands, 10% of whom could be helped by the chip.

The treatment costs around €100,000 but staff at the clinic hopes it will be covered by insurance in the future.

The Netherlands is the sixth country to undertake the procedure, following Germany, England, Italy, Saudi Arabia and the US.
