Food scandals lead to change in meat-eating habits

A string of recent food scandals has led one in five Dutch households to eat less or different sorts of meat, according to research carried out for environmental group Natuur & Milieu.

A switch to organic and free-range meat is the most popular option, but 7% of families have also cut down on their meat consumption in general.

Nevertheless, 75% say the horse meat affair and other instances are no reason to change their eating habits.

The average Dutch person ate 84.2 kilos of meat last year, down from 87 kilos in 2000.
