Man jailed for throwing tea light holder at queen wants compensation

The man jailed for five months for throwing a glass tea light holder at the queen’s golden coach in 2010 is demanding €100,000 compensation from the state for wrongful imprisonment.

Erwin L spent two years in jail waiting for his case to come to trial, but was given just a five-month sentence on appeal last week.

At the original trial in 2011, L was sentenced to a year in a psychiatric prison, but that was later overturned.

His lawyer says he is entitled to around €50,000 for the time spent in jail (€85 a night) plus an extra payout because of the media frenzy surrounding the case.
