The Netherlands poised to get top European job, says Barroso
The Netherlands will soon hold a top job within the European Union, the president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso told the Volkskrant on Saturday.
‘The Netherlands will very soon get a very important top European position,’ Barroso said in an interview with the paper. ‘That is my prediction and my predictions come true.’
There has been considerable speculation that finance minister Jeroen Dijsselbloem is to be appointed chairman of the influential group of 17 euro finance ministers.
Agreement
European sources told the paper prime minister Mark Rutte, German chancellor Angela Merkel and other leading officials have reached agreement on Dijsselbloem’s appointment.
And Luxembourg prime minister Jean-Claude Juncker said earlier this week he had ‘reasons to believe’ Dijsselbloem could be his successor as chairman of the euro group.
Juncker told a local radio station he expects to request nominations by early January and ‘there will only be one candidacy.’
