High water levels lead to New Year swim cancellations

Several of the traditional New Year’s Day swims have been cancelled because of high water levels in the rivers, news agency ANP said on Monday.

The swims at Doesburg, Opheusden and Ooijpolder have already been dropped because the high water has hidden street furniture and the actual edge of the river, Nos television reported.
The water level in the Rhine reached 14.15 metres above NAP on Monday morning at Lobith, where it crosses into the Netherlands, and is expected to start dropping soon.
Thousands of people take part in the New Year swims. The biggest takes place at the seaside resort of Scheveningen, where 10,000 people have a dip in the sea.
