Biofuels are pushing up food prices: aid groups

Aid group Oxfam Novib is calling on the Netherlands and rest of the EU to top mixing fuels made from grain and vegetable matter with petrol and diesel.

The organisation says mixing biofuels with fossil fuels is forcing up food prices, making some essentials unaffordable for the world’s poor.
Instead, biofuels should be produced from used fats, farming waste and algae, the organisation says.
Its research shows around 60% of land purchases made in Asia, Africa and Latin America over the past 10 years were to produce biofuels.
