Police in Gelderland have confiscated 309 sheep which they think may have been stolen over the past two weeks by sheep rustlers.

The sheep were spotted in a field ‘where there are not normally any’, news agency ANP reported. Other sheep were found in a nearby shed.
The animals have now been taken into quarantine at a secret location while their owners are traced.

ANP says it is not clear if the sheep are among the 550 animals stolen from the villages of Ammerzoden, Well and Erlecom near Nijmegen over the past two weeks.
According to the Telegraaf, there have been at least 10 thefts of sheep and illegal meat traders are thought to be behind the thefts. The animals may now be abroad, the paper said.
Erlecom sheep farmer Wilbert Verriet told the paper: ‘I can’t believe it. They just loaded up 40 ewes and one ram.’

The paper says farm ministry inspectors, police and farming association LTO Nederland are all working together to try to end the thefts.
