An experiment allowing 17-year-olds to take their driving test is proving a success, the AD reports on Monday.

Since the trial was introduced a year ago, 10,500 17-year-olds have passed their test, a success rate of 56%. The first-time pass rate for 18-year-olds is below 50%, the paper says.
Since November 2011, 16-year-olds have been able to take their driving theory exam and start driving lessons, allowing them to take a test as soon as they turn 17. However, 17-year-olds are only allowed to drive when accompanied by a named driver.
The aim of the new system is to reduce accidents involving young drivers.
In the Netherlands, learner drivers can only take to the road with a qualified instructor.
