Dutch unemployment rate is second lowest in Europe

The Dutch jobless total may have risen this year but it still remains the second lowest in Europe, the national statistics office CBS said on Thursday.

Calculated according to international definitions, the CBS said 5.3% of the Dutch working population was officially unemployed in July. Austria has the lowest unemployment rate at 4.5% and Luxembourg, Germany and Malta also have jobless rates which are well below 6%.
The CBS’s own calculations give a Dutch unemployment rate of 6% because the institute uses different age groups and different definitions of working hours, the Telegraaf said.
