Six out of 10 students get money from their parents

Some six out of 10 students in the Netherlands are helped financially by their parents, according to research by the family spending institute Nibud.

On average, students who live away from home get €233 a month from their parents, while those who still live in the family house get €100.
This takes the average income of a live-out student to €915, while home students get €535. Some 70% of students have a job, earning an average €354 a month. The rest of their money comes from grants and loans.
Parents are most likely to pay college fees, health insurance and for books, the Nibud survey found.
Nibud said last year students build up an average debt of €14,657 by the time they leave university, double the debt accumulated in 2004.
