Police to issue computerised fines, not paper ones, from 2014
The justice ministry is working on plans to replace current paper-on-the-spot fines from police officers with digital ones, justice minister Ivo Opstelten said in a briefing to MPs.
Police officers will be equipped with a hand-held computer, allowing them to enter details directly so the ministry’s collection agency can issue the fine immediately, the minister said.
Every year, police hand out 900,000 fines for petty offences such as urinating in public and cycling through red lights. This is ‘time-wasting idiocy’, the minister said.
The change, which will require an amendment to the law, has a target implementation date of January 2014.
