Majority for adding sexual discrimination to the constitution
A majority of MPs is now in favour of changing article 1 of the constitution to include a ban on discrimination on the grounds of sexuality, gay rights lobby group COC told nu.nl on Friday.
The group has been running a poll among MPs on its Gayvote.nl website.
On Thursday, the labour party PvdA put forward an action plan for a change in the constitution. ‘Article 1 bans discrimination on the grounds of political choice, race, sex, religion and age,’ the party’s Ronald Plasterk said.
The coalition partners, the right-wing liberal VVD and the Christian democrat CDA, were against adding sexual discrimination to the constitution at the previous general election. They are now for the move, according to the COC.
The socialist SP, left-wing liberal D66, green GroenLinks, animal rights PvdD and the PvdA parties were already in favour.
‘Article 1 is considered the flagship of the constitution,’ the COC’s Philip Tijsma told nu.nl. ‘If you can add a small pink triangle to the flag, it would be a good step for gay emancipation.’
