The Telegraaf reports the coastguard turned out to help at least eight yachts on the North Sea and Ijsselmeer lake. Two containers also broke loose from a ship west of Goeree in the south of the country.
In The Hague, tram services were disrupted by fallen branches brought down by strong gusts and there were many reports of storm damage around the Noordwijk seaside resort.
The rain also caused localised flooding in western parts of Friesland province. Water boards decided to pump excess water into the Wadden Sea after 70 mm of rain fell in some areas within a short space of time.
Meanwhile, weather bureau KNMI said on Friday this summer began chilly, with both June and July recording lower than average temperatures.
In August, however, there were sunny spells every day even though it also rained more than normal.
