First Utrecht asbestos scare evacuees allowed home

The first of hundreds of people forced to leave their homes in Utrecht because of an asbestos scare will be allowed back on Thursday.

Around 174 families were forced out of their homes because of the asbestos scare and have been staying in hotels since July 22.
They will be allowed back, with their pets, under supervision by the clean-up team.
Housing corporation Mitros has not yet said how asbestos was released into the atmosphere during renovation work on two flats built in the 1960s.
Mitros director Rob Rötscheid told journalists the clean-up operation will cost millions of euros. ‘But getting people back into their homes is our priority. Money and legal cases will come later,’ he said.
Weeks
Local council representatives will hold an information meeting on Thursday to discuss the asbestos problem and give other evacuees some idea of how long they will be away from home.
Those moving back on Thursday live on the Marco Pololaan, but people with homes on the Stanleylaan, Amerikalaan and Afrikalaan may have weeks to wait until they get the all-clear, say press reports.
