Olympics: Disappointing start for Dutch swimmers
Inge Dekker, Marleen Veldhuis, Femke Heemskerk and Ranomi Kromowidjojo on Saturday failed to defend the Olympic title they won four years ago in Peking in the 4×100 metres freestyle relay.
The defending champions took the silver medal, losing out to Australia who took gold.
The race was lost by the first change-over when Dekker came in last. Veldhuis and Heemskerk managed to make up some distance and Kromowidjojo put in an impressive sprint to finish just ahead of the US, who took bronze.
Elsewhere in the swimming, Nick Driebergen is through to the semi-finals of the 100 metre backstroke, beating his own Dutch record by 0.16 seconds. And Sebastiaan Verschuren, European champion in 2011, made the semi-finals of the 200 metre freestyle.
Hockey
The women’s field hockey team won their first match, beating Belgium 3-0. The defending champions had a difficult first half against a tight Belgian defence, but Kim Lammers finally made it 1-0.
In the second half, the Belgians tired and Lammers and Caia van Maasakker both scored.
Beach volley ball
Sanne Keizer and Marleen van Iersel, the 2012 European Champions beach volley ball, lost their first match in group D, going down 21-14, 16-21, 11-15 against the Spanish duo Liliana Fernandez and Elsa Baquerizo.
Table tennis
In the table tennis, Yao Jie won her first match, beating the Lithuanian Akvile Stapusaityte 21-16, 21-7.
