New IJmuiden sea locks set to cost €848m, says ministry

Replacing the current sea locks complex in IJmuiden will cost €848m, of which the bulk will come from national government, the infrastructure ministry said on Friday.

The current system, used by ships heading up the North Sea canal to Amsterdam, dates from 1929 and will need replacing within 20 years, the city’s port authority says.
The government’s macro-economic forecasting agency CPB has criticised calls to replace the locks, saying the investment will never be earned back.
National and local government back plans to develop a 500 metre lock which will allow bigger freight and cruise ships to reach the capital.
