Health minister threatens legislation on salt levels in food
The food industry faces legislation to force a reduction in salt and fat levels in processed food, unless it voluntarily takes action, health minister Edith Schippers says in Monday’s Volkskrant.
Food processing firms have until the end of the year to cut back on salt, the minister told the paper.
On average, people need some six grammes of salt a day, but in practice men eat some 10 grammes and women 7.5 grammes. The public health institute RIVM calls these figures ‘worrying’, the paper said.
Schippers is due to debate her ministry’s efforts to promote good health with MPs on Monday.
