School pupils arrested during extra hour protests

Police used horses and water canon to break up a protest by around 1,000 school pupils on Amsterdam’s Museum square on Wednesday afternoon.

According to local television station AT5, the police moved in because fireworks were being thrown.
The teenagers were demonstrating against government plans to increase the number of compulsory teaching hours from 1,000 to 1,040 a year. They fear the extra hours will be filled with compulsory homework classes and other activities rather than actual lessons.
Strike
Teaching unions are planning to strike against the increased hours in January.
Several people were arrested during the protests and one remained in custody on Thursday morning, AT5 said.
The increase in teaching hours has been approved by the lower house of parliament but still needs to be voted on by the senate.
