Competition authority fines energy firm Greenchoice €7.2m

The competition authority NMa has fined energy supplier Greenchoice a record €7.2m for failing to provide final bills to consumers who have ended their contracts and should get money back.

In the Netherlands, consumers pay a fixed monthly fee for their electricity and gas, based on their likely consumption for a full year.
The NMa said it had reached a deal with Greenchoice to prevent this from occurring in the future so that customers who switch suppliers get any money due within two months.
Final bill
Around 20% of customers who stopped using Greenchoice between March 2005 and March 2011 were affected by the problems, and over half of them never received a final bill.
The company said it has now caught up on the backlog, and that people who had to pay more to clear their bills do not have to do so.
The fine is the highest ever levied on an energy company since deregulation, Nos television said.
