Christian Democrats slow switch to 130 kph. Safety first, they say

A 130 kph speed limit will only be introduced next year on motorways which are safe enough to handle it, MPs agreed on Thursday evening.

The cabinet had planned to introduce the higher limit on 60% of the country’s roads in September 2012, saying safety standards would be improved after the new speed limit is imposed.
But Christian Democrat MPs insisted on a safety-first approach, winning the support of a majority in parliament.
Improvements
Transport minister Melanie Schultz said she now expects 40% of motorways to have the new speed limit next year. Others will follow when improvements to slip roads and other changes are made.
Parliament also supported a second CDA motion which would rule out an increase in the speed limit if the move would lead to a deterioration in air quality.
CDA MP Sander de Rouwe said it would be irresponsible to spend €41m on measures to counteract the deterioration in air quality at a time of economic austerity.
